Участникам предлагалось нарисовать автомобиль, который мог бы стать следующей иконой Volkswagen, вслед за знаменитым «Жуком», не менее знаменитыми T1, Golf, и New Beetle...
В дизайнерском соревновании, несмотря на проходящие параллельно три (!) серьезных международных конкурса автомобильного дизайна, приняло участие 90 энтузиастов из России, Украины, Белоруссии и других стран - республик бывшего СССР.

Just watched this movie for the 3rd time last night and I just NOW understood the whole story about who killed who and why and what and all. Funny part is, I didn't really need to know what the actual plot was to like the movie.

Best lines:

Big Gay Perry: You don't get it, do you? This isn't "good cop, bad cop." This is fag and New Yorker. You're in a lot of trouble.

Harold: Don't worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to end this 17 times.

Harold: I peed on the corpse. Can they do, like, an ID from that?
Big Gay Perry: I'm sorry, you peed on...?
Harold: On the corpse. My question is...
Big Gay Perry: No, my question. I get to go first. Why in pluperfect hell would you pee on corpse?

Harold: [after Perry removes a gun from his crotch after shooting their captor] Wow! I was glad you had a gun in there. For a second, I actually thought you could do that, like it was some big gay thing.

Harold: Well what I'm doing for the guy who likes to bluff is I'm playing a little game called "Am I Bluffing?"
[Loads one round into the revolver to play Russian Roulette]
Harold: Where is she? Where the fuck is Harmony? You want to play hardball? I can do that.
[Spins the chamber and points the gun]
Harold: Where is the girl?
[Shoots the guy in the head]
Perry: [Stuttering at first] What did you just do?
Harold: [Confused] I just put in one bullet, didn't I?
Perry: You put a live round in that gun?
Harold: Well yeah, there was like an 8% chance. Right?
Perry: Eight?! Who taught you math?!

I love good character banter. It's totally one of the reasons I make comics.

Big Breasted Vampire Death (the reprint, that is) has been mailed to the printer.  I should have it back soon and ready for sale at Flashback Weekend June 27-29th.

I've also lettered the first six pages of Scared Ya and also hope to have it for Flashback.  Wish me luck.

Hey, any of you out there in internet land in the Denver area?  What are you doing Wednesday night?

Michele's paintings are being featured in a gallery show, and you should totally go!

Here's info on the show, and here's info about the gallery.  Michele will be there, so stop by and say "hi!"

She just finished a MASSIVE painting, going even further in the new direction she's been heading.  It's INCREDIBLE, but she finished it just in time for the show, so we don't have any pictures of it yet.  It may just be too big to scan in general, and I'm not sure if we'll be able to get a photo that will do it justice.  I guess you'll just have to go to JANAN Creative Arts & Gallery from 6 - 9 pm Wed, May 14 to see it.

Misc. comic book reviews #13

Batman #656 from DC Comics (2006): This is back when Grant Morrisson was writing and Andy Kubert was drawing the title.  They were a good combination.  This issue has Batman fighting ninja man-bats and meeting his new son (whose mother is Talia al Ghul).  There are a lot of fun salutes to Jim Steranko in this issue as Batman fights the man-bats in an art gallery showcasing a lot of pop art.

Bob Burden's Original Mysterymen Presents #4 from Dark Horse Comics (1999): Bob Burden is one of those great writers every forgets about nowadays, which is sad because this is a great book.  This issue is an "all villain issue" and tells the tale of three super villains as they pull an armored car job, kill a lot of people, get away with it for a short time, and then reap horrible consequences and fall from glory.  It also pokes fun at comic book / pop culture conventions to boot.

Booster Gold #'s 2-3 (2007): Geoff Johns takes a second-string character and turns him into history's greatest hero.  Genius.  It's a fun book with Booster teaming up with another one of my favorite DC second-stringers, Rip Hunter the Time Master, to save the universe as we know it from villains screwing with time.  Plus, Jonah Hex is in the third issue!

Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! in the Oz-Wonderland War Trilogy #'s 1-2 from DC Comics (1986): It's a mouthful, but it's a fun read.  The Captain Carrot comics were always fun, all-ages goofiness.  These double-sized books are chock-full of goofy puns and action sequences.

Catwoman: When in Rome #1 from DC Comics (2004): Another gorgeous book from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.  Selina Kyle goes to Rome, bringing the Riddler along to help her with a big theft, and gets framed for the murder of a mafia don in the first issue.  The Joker is somehow involved, but no one knows why.  Sale's art is fantastic, but I was puzzled why Loeb made the Riddler out to be a bumbling bit of comic relief after he made the Riddler a bad ass in the "Hush" storyline over in Batman.  Did I miss something?

The Creeper #6 from DC Comics (2007): The Creeper rights more wrongs, talks with Batman, and trashes some more criminals in this anti-climactic mini-series by Steve Niles.  I love the Creeper, so this weak series was a disappointment for me.

The Flash #209 from DC Comics (2004): This was during the whole Identity Crisis - Infinite Crisis mess so the book's a bit of a tainted read for me.  There's a Superman-Flash race, but there isn't much significance to it.  Wally spends most of the time looking for his wife.  There are better Flash books out there.

Jack of Fables #3 from DC / Vertigo Comics (2006): Another fun tale of everyone's favorite Fable bastard.  In this issue, Jack plans a prison break from a weird community where Fables are held against their will by some weird Fable collector.  Lots of fun dialogue and another great cover by James Jean.

Marvel Two-in-One #99 from Marvel Comics (1983): The Thing and Rom the Spaceknight?  I'm there.  It's an average story, at best, about the Thing and Rom fighting a cult of Dire Wraith (non-Skrull shape-changing aliens) witches who have hijacked a suit of spaceknight armor.  Rom is far overdue for a relaunch.  Don't tell me the fanboys wouldn't go crazy for a Rom comic with an Alex Ross cover.

Outlaws of the West #79 from Modern Comics (1970): This reprint of a classic Charlton western comic is typical of the genre.  It has three tales of outlaws, two good and one bad, who live and die by the gun.  The best story is about a bank robber who has a perfect plan until his greed and ego get in the way.

Red Sonja / Claw: The Devil's Hands #'s 3-4 from Wildstorm / Dynamite Entertainment (2006): A nice wrap-up to the mini-series starring these sword-and-sandal stars.  Both characters hack and slash their way to an evil wizard who has a link to Claw and his possessed hand.  It's fun stuff and John Layman writes Red Sonja well.

Rush City #2 from DC Comics (2006): A fun mini-series by Chuck Dixon (perhaps the best action writer in modern comics) involving a guy who makes a living finding people.  He has a fast car, a fast draw, and a quick wit.  He runs into the Black Canary in this issue as they both search for a man who has a bomb implanted in his body that will detonate if he falls asleep.

The Spirit #7 from DC Comics (2007): This "summer special" issue features short tales by various authors, but none of them are Darwyn Cooke (although he does contribute the cover).  As a result, this is the worst issue of the series I've read so far.  Walter Simonson's (drawn well by Chris Sprouse) is a confusing tale about a diamond heist and Kyle Baker's (also drawn by him) is a mixed-up mess.  Oddly enough, the story written by Jimmy Palmiotti  (drawn by Jodi Bernet) is the best one of the bunch.  I think Palmiotti's an over-rated writer, so I was surprised by this.

Suicide Squad #2 from DC Comics (2007): I'm happy as a cat in a birdcage whenever John Ostrander is writing this title.  This issue features Rick Flagg teaming up with an arch-enemy to survive on a Skartaris (home of Warlord) after they're transported there moments before a WWII atomic bomb almost killed both of them.  Great stuff.

I finished C.S. Lewis' A Horse and His Boy.  It's a fine fairy tale and a quick, light read.  I don't know if it has any major affect on the Narnia series since I haven't finished reading the Narnia series.

Prince Caspian is my new "chapter every day book" in preparation to see the new Narnia film (probably next week).  I'm seven chapters into it.  It's also a quick read, but a lot of backstory so far.

More later.
